What Is Resveratrol? What You Need to Know About Resveratrol and Bioavailability

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenolic stilbene compound produced by various plants. Although it is found in grapes, peanuts, and certain fruits, one of the major botanical sources of resveratrol used in dietary supplements is Polygonum cuspidatum.

Resveratrol, particularly in its trans-resveratrol form, has been extensively studied for its antioxidant properties, interactions with cellular processes, metabolism, and bioavailability.

Health-Supporting Properties of Resveratrol

Resveratrol is one of the most extensively studied natural polyphenols due to its biological properties. Scientific research has focused particularly on its antioxidant properties and its effects on cellular processes associated with oxidative stress. Its potential effects on mechanisms related to inflammatory processes, cellular signaling pathways, energy metabolism, and cardiovascular and neurological processes are also being investigated.

However, effects observed in laboratory and animal studies should not be assumed to occur to the same extent in humans, and the strength of clinical evidence varies depending on the outcome being investigated.

Why Is Resveratrol Bioavailability Important?

Resveratrol presents an interesting case: intestinal absorption and bioavailability are not the same thing.

Human studies have reported that a substantial proportion of orally administered resveratrol can be absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. However, following absorption, resveratrol is rapidly metabolized in the intestine and liver, primarily into glucuronide and sulfate derivatives. As a result, the amount of unchanged resveratrol reaching the systemic circulation is very low. One review reported that although oral absorption in humans may be approximately 75%, the oral bioavailability of unchanged resveratrol is well below 1%.

Resveratrol's low water solubility is another important limitation from a formulation perspective.

Therefore, when evaluating a resveratrol-containing product, it is important to consider not only “how many milligrams of resveratrol it contains,” but also the formulation in which resveratrol is delivered and how it is presented to the body.

How Does Science Aim to Improve the Utilization of Resveratrol?

Due to resveratrol's low water solubility, rapid metabolism, and limited oral bioavailability, various carrier and formulation technologies have been investigated for many years.

Micellar systems, nanoemulsions, lipid-based carriers, liposomes, polymeric carriers, cyclodextrin complexes, and other formulation approaches are among the strategies being investigated to improve the physicochemical properties of resveratrol and its delivery to the body.

Rather than simply increasing the amount of resveratrol in a formulation, the fundamental aim of these approaches is to enable more effective delivery of resveratrol in aqueous biological environments and address the factors limiting its bioavailability.

The Nutriente Life Approach

At Nutriente Life, we are developing a patent-pending innovative carrier technology for natural active compounds with limited absorption and bioavailability, such as resveratrol.

Our technology is based on a formulation approach designed to spontaneously form micelle structures when it encounters the aqueous environment of the gastrointestinal tract. By also utilizing the functional properties of natural glycosides within our carrier system, we aim to promote more homogeneous dispersion of resveratrol in aqueous environments and facilitate its effective delivery to the intestinal environment.

Through this approach, we reformulate a valuable nature-derived active compound using modern carrier system science.

What matters is not only how much resveratrol you take, but how effectively your body can utilize it.
